According to the National Cancer Institute, cancer survivorship covers the physical, psychosocial and economic issues of cancer, from diagnosis on. It includes issues related to the ability to get health care and follow-up treatment, late effects of treatment, secondary cancers and quality of life. A person is considered to be a cancer survivor from the moment of diagnosis throughout his or her life.

The REACH for the STARS Survivorship Program is a new program for patients in care at the Division of Hematology and Oncology at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. The program is designed to provide guidance and ongoing support to pediatric cancer survivors in an effort to help them improve and maintain a high quality and successful life. REACH (Research, Education, Advocacy, Continued life and Health) for the STARS (Survivors Tackling All Roadblocks Successfully) will offer patients and families:

  • Individualized surveillance recommendations for late effects based on prior treatment.
  • Access to the latest wellness information and education to encourage a healthy lifestyle.
  • Access to an interactive program website featuring additional resources on survivorship, message boards, inspirational stories and a place for peer support and encouragement.
  • Opportunities to participate in Children’s Oncology Group protocols studying the late effects of some treatment regimes.
  • Invitations to outreach events including the Cycle of Life, a pediatric celebration of National Cancer Survivors Day.

In addition to the above services, the REACH for the STARS program staff will provide patients with a comprehensive summary of all treatments they received while in care, which will be archived on-line if ever needed by the survivor or family. Program staff will also recommend periodic evaluations and follow-up for patients who may experience long-term effects of certain treatments.
